Local Railroads
On July 4, 1854, the first railroad train ran through Haddonfield from Camden (Cooper's Point) to Berlin (Long-A-Coming).

The distance was 161/2 miles. With the passing of years, the tracks were extended to complete an entire route from Camden to Atlantic City. Annually about 35,000 persons patronized excursions from Camden to Atlantic City.

In 1877, 62 excursions, numbering many people, were run to picnic grounds in the park at Kirkwood Lake which was a much closer recreation area from Camden and Philadelphia than the seashore.

An annual one-day excursion sponsored by Haddon Fire Company No. 1 was scheduled every summer to Wildwood. The whole populous of Haddonfield was gathered on the platform of the station house that day, waiting for the train to arrive with the special cars that was to take them on their summer outing. In the early 1900's, this was the vacation day of the year.

In 1870, an engine house and turntable had been erected here in town which was about where the Speedline Station is now.  There was a single track into two until 1879 when a double track line was completed between Camden and Haddonfield.

In 1896, the eleven and nine tenth mile long Marlton-Medford line merged as a feeder line. The official purpose of this short line, beginning in Haddonfield and ending in Medford, was to secure a rail connection for further expansion.  In 1884, six locals operated between Camden and Haddonfield. Altogether, there were 16 trains daily, except Sunday, which passed through town in each direction.

In 1925, a small gas car was installed on the Marlton-Medford run that dropped passengers off in the morning in Haddonfield and laid over at the tracks by the outfield fence of the Presby Field. In the evening, it returned to Medford. It was not reliable, with frequent breakdowns, and after a short time it was replaced by a one car steam train.

With the changing years, the railroad, as a means of transportation, declined and in 1966, the main line between Haddonfield and Camden gave way to the construction of the Delaware River Port Authority's Lindenwold Rapid Transit line.

The information given in this article was secured from Marion Tatem, who has written the history of railroads for the Haddonfield Historical Society.
