Accessing Mail via an SSH Tunnel

These instructions are for people who’s ISP may have blocked our mail server for any reason. If you only need access to Webmail, please use our web proxy for Webmail: http://mail2.nova.org

Windows

  1. Run PuTTY
    • Hostname is members.nova.org
    • Select Protocol SSH (or enter Port 22)
    • public:support:email:putty-startup.png
  2. Select Tunnels from the left hand menu, near the bottom
  3. Under “Add New Forwarded Port” enter the following:
    • Source Port: 8443
    • Destination: mail.nova.org:443
    • Click Add
    • public:support:email:putty-add-tunnel.png
  4. Click Open (at the bottom)

If you would like to use IMAP, SMTP, and POP, add these entries to “Add New Forwarded Port”:

  • Source: 8025 Destination: mail.nova.org:25
  • Source: 8110 Destination: mail.nova.org:110
  • Source: 8143 Destination: mail.nova.org:143

You’ll have to set your mail reading application to use “localhost” as your mailhost, and:

  • Port 8025 for SMTP
  • Port 8110 for POP
  • Port 8143 for IMAP

These are already secure via the tunnel, so no TLS/SSL option is necessary.

This will start an SSH connection to our shared web hosting box, members.nova.org. You will be asked for your username and password, this is the same as your mail username and password.

Once you have entered that correctly, you will be logged into members.nova.org, and the ports you set up in the Tunnel configuration will now be available on your local machine. In order to get to Webmail using this process:

  1. Minimize the Putty Window.
  2. Open your web browser to this address: https://localhost:8443/
  3. Click “OK” to any warnings you may get.

You should now be connected to Webmail. Contact technical@nova.org with any questions.

Mac OS

Since you already have a nice Unix system to work with, this is easy. Open up a terminal window.

ssh -l username -L 8443:mail.nova.org:443 members.nova.org

where username is your username. It will prompt you for a password. Enter it, then once you are connected, minimize the terminal window. Then:

  1. Open your web browser to this address: https://localhost:8443/
  2. Click “OK” to any warnings you may get.

To add SMTP, IMAP and POP forwarding, use this command:

ssh -l username -L 8443:mail.nova.org:443 -L 8025:mail.nova.org:25 -L 8110:mail.nova.org:110 -L 8143:mail.nova.org:143 members.nova.org

You should now be connected to Webmail. Contact technical@nova.org with any questions.
