Nowadays, this would be known as an antique shop. Cooper was known as "Coop" by everyone in town.
Coop acquired his stock by buying a whole house full of furniture and articles whenever an executor would be settling up an estate when the last member of a family living in town passed away. This merchandise acquired would always be of ancient vintage.
Tables, chairs, dishes, mirrors, light fixtures and tools were piled in Coop's rooms. An antique dealer of today would go out of his mind if he could see Coop Watson's as it was back in those days.
Pop Day spent many an hour in Coop's, as it was just around the corner from his shoemaker shop. Pop was skilled with tools and given time, he could repair anything that needed to be done.
Coop was a hammer and saw man so he leaned heavily on Pop's ability when something tedious had to be fixed. When Pop had completed the job, Coop would say, "Well George, what do you want?" Pop would pick something out of the stock that took his eye. That would be his pay for the work done.
One day Coop acquired a small square floor safe without a key. Pop spent hours before he successfully made a wax impression and put together a five pronged metal key that fit in the knob on the door of the safe, and when the knob was turned, the door opened. Pop's pay was the safe itself, and it is still in the family somewhere.
Mama Day acquired a house full of more china, bisque figurines, cut class, dishes, wall plaques and matched vases than she knew what to do with. Yes, Pop Day was a good provider.
